Footprint of paper business cards

Paper business cards are everywhere in professional life. They’re exchanged quickly and often forgotten just as fast.

Yet behind this familiar gesture lies an environmental impact that is rarely considered. As sustainability becomes an important factor in professional choices, it’s worth taking a closer look at how business cards fit into today’s environmental reality.

Each year, millions of paper business cards are printed worldwide. For every10 billion cards produced, around 5 million trees are cut down. Despite the resources involved, most cards are used once and then discarded.

Paper production is also highly resource-intensive. Producing just one ton of paper requires around 17,000 gallons of water - enough to fill more than 25 standard swimming pools. Once thrown away, many cards end up in landfills, where decomposing paper releasesmethane, a greenhouse gas28 times more impactful than CO₂.

What feels like a small, everyday object carries a much larger environmental cost than it appears.
